The skill of speaking in public is crucial to every community, including our school community. At Colaiste Chiarain we provide our students with a complete education, thus we encourage our students to get involved in public speaking and debating.
The main idea behind the public speaking and debating club is to help students find their voice and learn how to use it in a strong, yet respectful manner.
We are involved in a number of national competitions, such as Soroptimist International Public Speaking competition, ActionTalk National Speech Writing Competition and the Concern Debates. Our students have secured places in national finals and in 2023 were overall winners of the Action Talk Speech writing competition.
However, it is not just about competitions! Our aim is to develop a skill that will stay with our students for life. Our club meets once a week in the school library. It is suited to students who would like to boost their confidence, learn a new skill and make new friends.
Congratulations to the Colaiste Chiarain Concern Debate 2024 team who have made it through to the quarter finals of the all Ireland competition defeating Bandon Grammar School, Cork. They successfully upheld the motion that "In the age of social media activism, young people often prioritise virtue signalling over genuine commitment to social change." Well done to the team who will now face Largy College, Monaghan in the quarter final in Dublin on March 12th.
